Janet Evans is an American former competition swimmer and Olympic gold medalist. She is widely regarded as one of the greatest female swimmers of all time, having won a total of four Olympic gold medals and nine world championship gold medals.

Evans was born on August 28, 1971, in Placentia, California. She began swimming at the age of five, and by the time she was 10, she was competing in national competitions. In 1984, at the age of 13, she became the youngest American swimmer to compete in the Olympics. She finished sixth in the 400-meter freestyle, and eighth in the 800-meter freestyle.

Evans' breakthrough came at the 1988 Olympics in Seoul, South Korea. At the age of 17, she won gold medals in the 400-meter freestyle, 800-meter freestyle, and 400-meter individual medley. She also won a silver medal in the 200-meter freestyle.

Evans continued to dominate the sport in the early 1990s. She won three gold medals at the 1991 World Championships, and two gold medals at the 1992 Olympics in Barcelona, Spain. She also set world records in the 400-meter freestyle, 800-meter freestyle, and 1500-meter freestyle.

Evans retired from competitive swimming in 1996. She was inducted into the International Swimming Hall of Fame in 1999, and the United States Olympic Hall of Fame in 2004. She is currently an assistant coach for the Stanford University women's swimming and diving team.
