The Early Years

The first Europeans to see the Yellowstone area were members of the Lewis and Clark Expedition in 1805. However, they did not explore the area in depth, and it was not until the 1860s that people began to realize the full extent of its wonders.

In 1869, the Washburn Expedition, led by General Henry Washburn, explored the Yellowstone area and reported back on its geothermal features, wildlife, and scenery. Their report helped to spark interest in the area, and in 1872, President Ulysses S. Grant signed a bill establishing Yellowstone National Park.

The Early Explorers

The early explorers of Yellowstone were a hardy bunch. They traveled by horseback, on foot, and by boat, and they faced many challenges along the way. They had to contend with extreme weather conditions, dangerous wildlife, and treacherous terrain. But they were also driven by a sense of adventure and a desire to see the wonders of the natural world.

One of the most famous early explorers of Yellowstone was John Colter. In 1807, he left the Lewis and Clark Expedition and traveled into the Yellowstone area. He was the first European to see the geysers and hot springs that are now a major attraction of the park.

Another famous early explorer of Yellowstone was Jim Bridger. Bridger was a mountain man and trapper who spent many years in the Yellowstone area. He was the first European to see the Old Faithful geyser, which is now one of the most popular attractions in the park.

The Establishment of Yellowstone National Park

The establishment of Yellowstone National Park was a major milestone in the history of conservation. It was the first national park in the United States, and it set a precedent for the protection of natural areas around the world.

The park was established in 1872, when President Ulysses S. Grant signed a bill that set aside the area "for the benefit and enjoyment of the people." The park was originally 2.2 million acres, but it has since been expanded to over 3.4 million acres.

The Park Today

Yellowstone National Park is now one of the most popular tourist destinations in the United States. It is home to a wide variety of wildlife, including bears, wolves, bison, and elk. The park also has many geothermal features, such as geysers, hot springs, and mud pots.

Yellowstone is a place of great beauty and wonder. It is a place where people can come to experience the natural world in all its glory. The park is a reminder of the importance of conservation, and it is a treasure that should be enjoyed by generations to come.
