Plot

The novel begins with the arrival of Uther Pendragon in Cornwall. Uther is a powerful warlord who has been sent by the High King to subdue the rebellious Cornish. Uther meets Igraine, the beautiful wife of the Duke of Cornwall, and is immediately smitten with her.
