Murdin was born in London in 1942. He developed an early interest in astronomy, and studied physics and astronomy at the University of Cambridge. After graduating, he worked as a research astronomer at the Royal Observatory, Edinburgh. In 1974, he joined the staff of the Institute of Astronomy at the University of Cambridge, where he is now a professor of astrophysics.

Murdin has written over 20 books on astronomy, including "The New Astronomy" (1989),"The Cosmic Century" (1995),and "The Handbook of Space" (2008). He has also written numerous articles for scientific journals and popular magazines. Murdin is a frequent speaker on astronomy, and has appeared on television and radio programs around the world.

Murdin's work has helped to bring astronomy to a wider audience. He is a gifted communicator who is able to explain complex astronomical concepts in a clear and engaging way. His books and articles have been translated into many languages, and he has given lectures to audiences of all ages around the world.

Murdin is a Fellow of the Royal Society and a member of the International Astronomical Union. He has received numerous awards for his work, including the Herschel Medal of the Royal Astronomical Society and the Beatrice M. Tinsley Prize of the American Astronomical Society.
