Procedure

  1. Begin by reviewing the concept of pilgrimage with students. Ask students to share any prior knowledge they have about pilgrimages.
  2. Next, introduce the Haj. Explain that the Haj is a pilgrimage to the holy city of Mecca in Saudi Arabia that is undertaken by Muslims from all over the world.
  3. Discuss the history of the Haj. Explain that the Haj dates back to the time of the Prophet Muhammad. According to tradition, the Prophet Muhammad performed the Haj in 632 CE.
  4. Explain that the rituals of the Haj have changed over time, but that the basic structure of the pilgrimage has remained the same.
  5. Conclude by asking students to share their thoughts on the Haj. What do they think is the significance of the Haj for Muslims? How does the Haj compare to other pilgrimages?
