Early life and career

Norman Thelwell was born in Birkenhead, Cheshire, England, in 1923. He developed a love of horses and riding at an early age, and he began drawing cartoons of horses and riders while he was still a teenager. After serving in the Royal Air Force during World War II, Thelwell studied art at the Liverpool School of Art. In 1949, he joined the staff of Punch magazine, where he would remain for the rest of his career.

Thelwell's cartoons

Thelwell's cartoons typically featured a group of riders and horses engaged in some sort of misadventure. His characters were often portrayed as being clumsy, accident-prone, and perpetually getting into trouble. However, Thelwell's cartoons were never malicious or mean-spirited. Instead, they were filled with wit, charm, and a deep affection for the equestrian world.

Thelwell's cartoons were enormously popular with the public. His work was published in numerous books and calendars, and he also created a number of animated films. Thelwell's cartoons have been translated into more than 20 languages, and they continue to be enjoyed by people all over the world.
