Steger's journey began in Resolute, Canada, on February 25, 1993. He was accompanied by a team of 12 Siberian huskies, and he planned to travel across the Arctic Ocean, the Beaufort Sea, and the Chukchi Sea to reach the Bering Strait. The journey was expected to take about four months.

From the outset, Steger faced numerous challenges. The weather was often harsh, with temperatures dropping below -50 degrees Fahrenheit. The terrain was difficult, with Steger having to navigate through ice floes, pressure ridges, and open water. And there was always the danger of polar bears, which are known to attack humans.

Despite the challenges, Steger pressed on. He traveled for hours each day, often covering more than 50 miles. He camped on the ice, and he ate whatever food he could find, including seal blubber and polar bear meat. Steger also had to deal with the mental challenges of being alone in such a vast and unforgiving environment.

After four months of grueling travel, Steger finally reached the Bering Strait on June 25, 1993. He had completed his 5,000-mile journey, and he had become the first person to cross the Arctic Ocean by dog sled alone.

Alone Across the Arctic is a fascinating account of an incredible journey. Steger's story is one of courage, determination, and love of the wilderness. The book is a must-read for anyone who is interested in adventure, travel, or the Arctic.
